Oral Histories & Memories

oral history

Our collection of recordings forms part of the Heritage Lottery Funded project, “York Remembers Rowntree”, that ran from September 2014 to March 2015. It represents the most complete oral and publicly accessible history of what Rowntree means to the people of York. The project focuses on four themes:

1.    Life within the factory (looking beyond the production line to consider all roles

2.    The development of New Earswick during the course of the twentieth-century

3.     Transportation in an around the factory

4.     Leisure and entertainment

The memories were gathered by project staff and volunteers and are supported by the “postcard memories” project launched by the Society in 2011. The 1000+ postcards are currently held in The Rowntree Society’s archive. We have made the majority of the audio recordings we made available online on our Memories pages. We also have a photo gallery of project participants.

There are a number of other websites that hold online Rowntree memories, which may be of further interest. Please note that these are held by independent websites/organisations and are not the property of The Rowntree Society or “York Remembers Rowntree” oral history project.
