Germany, Rowntrees and

The Rowntree family roots are closely connected in Germany, initially through the marriage of Joseph to Julia Seebohm in 1862.  The Seebohm family was from a German Quaker colony Friedensthal (‘Peacedale’) near the city of Bad Pyrmont in Westphalia, a spa town in the 18th and 19th century.

Joseph and Antoinette’s six children all grew up speaking German, and the family had a German nanny. John Wilhelm and Seebohm in particular continued to reflect this interest in Germany in their professional work.
