Events in 2013

A brand new website

We created this website! It includes nearly 150 encyclopedic entries on anything to do with the Rowntree story in its broadest sense and it includes information about resources, walks and our latest activities. We had an official launch in May 2013 at the YHA York (the former home of Frank Rowntree).

The day the Rowntree Descendants came to York

A highlight of the year was that 24 members of the Rowntree family visited York in October and the Society played a role in accommodating them and in recording their children’s memories, and in putting on a Rowntree Walk for the adults, as well as a visit to York’s Chocolate Story and coverage in the Press.

Here they are seen at the Friargate Meeting House in York.

Blood and Chocolate

An exciting co-production between Pilot Theatre, York Theatre Royal and Slung Low, written by Mike Kenny.  Blood and Chocolate was a city-wide ‘adventure through the streets of York’ that took place on 3-20 October 2013, and based around York’s chocolate history at the outbreak of World War I. Lots of fringe and outreach events also took place around this production and we contributed to events at Joseph Rowntree School, Bootham School, and the University of York.  For more information click here.

Out and about giving talks

Lectures were given by a trustee at Dalton Hall (University of Manchester) and at the York Festival of Ideas 2013.

There was a talk on Arnold Rowntree MP at the Borthwick Institute for Archives as part of National Archive Awareness Week. See Arnold Rowntree MP and the Business of Conscientious Objection

We visited several local history groups and meetings across the city, such as this group in Dringhouses.
