Behind the scenes… how to make your own fake chocolates

By Jaanika Reinvald.

Taking into account our own fondness for real chocolates it was decided that the best way to actually manage a chocolate-packing activity was to make a batch of very realistic looking fake chocolates. In these five easy steps you can make your own set of fake chocolates.

1) Purchase a box of Rowntree-created chocolates to use as templates and taste samples.

2) FIMO polymer clay that can be found in most better-stocked supermarkets is produced in a variety of chocolate brown colours from light golden brown milk chocolate to a much darker cocoa-rich chocolate brown. From one 1.97 ounce packet it is possible to make around six regular-sized chocolates.

FIMO polymer clay is sold in a variety of colours and easily moulded.

3) Now there are two choices. You can try and make forms as close to the original as possible and produce truthful copies of Black Magic chocolates OR you can let your imagination loose and produce a selection of chocolates that you have always wanted but could never find in a ready-made box.

4) Once you have produced the most mouth-watering selection of chocolates known to man comes the most important step of the entire process. In order for the fake chocolates to be complete the polymer clay needs to be baked in the oven for 20-30 minutes and, here is the important part – the temperature MUST NOT exceed 110 degrees Celsius.

5) When the chocolates have been taken out of the oven and you have waited sufficiently long for them to cool down it is time to try them out on friends and relatives and look at their baffled faces when they try to figure out what in these otherwise moorish pieces of candy has gone wrong.

Making fake chocolates is especially enjoyable around Christmas when there are plenty of real chocolate examples and family around.
